Have you ever had anyone ask you if you are a religious person, and have you ever wondered what that truly means? In preparation for this lesson, I looked it up on the internet, and AI defined a religious person as "someone who believes in a higher power or divine force and actively follows the practices, rules, and community traditions of an organized faith." It then highlighted three core characteristics: belief, which involves trusting in specific doctrines, sacred texts, or the existence of a god or gods; behavior, expressed through taking part in regular routines like prayer, worship services, or moral actions; and belonging, which centers on connecting with a wider community that shares the same faith and history.

In our text tonight, James 1:26–27, James speaks to us about two distinct realities: the person who thinks himself or herself to be religious, but whose religion is worthless, and what "pure and undefiled religion" actually looks like in God’s eyes. As we examine our own lives tonight, I want each of us to do so through God’s lens rather than our own. After all, many of us have undoubtedly thought we were right about something at one time or another, only to find out later that we were completely wrong.
