In chapter 18 of his gospel, Matthew tells us about a time when Jesus was in Capernaum with his disciples. After some teaching, there came a point when Peter seems to have come to Jesus in private to ask Him a question. His question was this, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” (Matthew 18:21). No doubt, Peter thought he was being generous with his answer. Jesus, however, must have humbled Peter with His response, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22). Stop and ask yourself, what does my forgiving a brother or sister in Christ have to do with compassion?
