God’s Great Mystery
What motivates us to do the things we do in life? You might be thinking, “that question has a number of answers” and you are right. We generally eat because we are hungry and sleep because we are tired. We work in order to provide the money necessary to pay our bills and provide for our families. Many of us are motivated by altruism — that unselfish devotion to the welfare of others. We have seen a lot of that over the last months. Scripture teaches us that many are motivated by the wrong things. John referred to them as, a. “The desires of the flesh” b. “The desires of the eyes” c. “The boastful pride of life” (1 John 2:16). We are to be people who . . . Strive for harmony and are sympathetic toward one another (1 Peter 3:8a). Are kindhearted and humble in spirit (1 Peter 3:8b). Are hospitable to one another and who use our gifts to serve one another (1 Peter 4:9,10). But what motivates us to do all these things? This is where today’s reading comes in.
