Prayer: A Window To Our Soul
In the text we are studying this morning, Luke tells us that “Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed
others with contempt” (Luke 18:9).
In other words, Jesus decided to tell His listeners this specific parable to address a sinful attitude which they possessed and demonstrated.
As Jesus concluded this parable He said, “I tell you, this man (tax collector) went to his house justified rather than the other (Pharisee); for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 18:14).
One man (the Pharisee) went to the temple that day smug in his “righteousness” feeling he had no need for God’s grace.
The other (tax collector) went as a sinner who yearned for God’s grace.
Time and again Jesus taught that sin is not primarily a broken law, but a broken relationship.
