As Christians, you and I have a host of reasons to sing God’s praises. Mary offers this hymn of praise to the Lord following Elizabeth’s words of blessing to her in verses 42-45. Mary’s praise, however, comes from deep within, from her “soul,” her “spirit”.

It is not superficial as was that of those who Jesus called hypocrites in His Sermon on the Mount because “the [loved] to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they [might] be seen by men” (Matthew 6:5).

As we look more closely at this beautiful hymn, let’s learn from Mary two things which she knew:

a. There is someone in whom we should rejoice and sing.

b. There are a number of reasons that we should do so.

May the world hear our praise and may it issue from hearts filled and overflowing with thanksgiving.
