It All Began On Pentecost

Preacher:
Series:
Passage: Acts 2:1-41
Service Type:

All of us here this morning are a product of the events which have preceded us as well as those which have taken place in our lifetime. Our lives have been shaped by those events either for  good or ill. If you were to take a moment and write down the top ten major world events which have taken place since the beginning of time, what would they be? Some of you might include the rise and fall of various empires (i.e., Babylonian, Medo-Persian, Greek, Roman) in your list. Others might include the invention of writing and the printing press, both of which facilitated communication and the sharing of ideas. Others might include the circumnavigation of our globe through various sailing vessels and the discovery of the Americas. The two World Wars would possibly make it onto someone’s list. Those of us who are Christians would no doubt include certain events which are not found on the lists of those who do not hold a high view of Scripture.
No doubt we would include the creation of the heavens and the earth by an all powerful, all-knowing, ever present, benevolent God. We would also add to our list the global flood of Noah’s day which basically rebooted civilization as it was known. The entrance of God into His creation in the form of a newborn and His eventual death, burial and resurrection would also make our list of important world events. There is one very important event which I would like for each of us to consider this morning. It was the sending of the Holy Spirit by God the Father almost 2,000 years ago the beginning of our Lord’s church.  Do you realize that outside of our Lord’s coming into this world and His death, burial and resurrection, no other world event has had the impact that the
establishment of His church has had. Our Scripture reading gives us the outcome of the events which happened on that Sunday morning so long ago. This morning, I would like for us to rehearse those events and to consider our own response to the good news which Peter declared that day. As our lesson title declares, “it all happened on Pentecost.”
