He Was Tempted Just Like We Are
Contrary to what some would have us believe evil is alive and at work in our world today.
But this evil is not just an impersonal force.
No, God’s Word teaches the reality of a personal evil spirit called Satan (“adversary”) or the devil (“slanderer” or accuser”).
The devil and the demons of which we read in Scripture are angelic beings who rebelled against God and was cast out of God’s presence.
They are the ones behind the evil in this world.
This is why the apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 6:12 that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places.”
He was writing of Satan and those in league with him.
While Satan is powerful and intelligent, unlike God, he is not omnipotent, omniscient or omnipresent.
Even though his final fate has already been decided, for the present, he remains a powerful and cunning adversary for God’s saints.
This morning, as we look at his temptation of our Lord in the wilderness, let us seek to learn as much as we can about his schemes and how we can stand firm against them.
