Abimelech: A Practical Atheist
Many people today feel that they are morally upright people and that God is somehow pleased with them. Their line of reasoning may go something like this:
"Everyone knows that I am usually a good person."
"My good deeds outweigh my bad ones."
"Even if they didn't, I am not as bad as some people."
Those who are outside of Christ have an eternal stake in being right in their line of thinking. If there was a God who is there, then certain uncomfortable things are true. Sadly, many people decide how they want to live and then search around for a religion or belief that permits the lifestyle they have chosen.
Abimelech proves to be a man who determines what is necessary for him to get ahead and then what he must do to stay ahead.
