God’s “Second String”
All of us who have ever played any kind of sport know what it means to be “second string.” We practice and work just as much as any other player on the team, but we may seldom see action in the actual game.
We encourage the players on the court or field, always prepared for the moment when the coach calls our name and sends us into the game. Second String players may never hear their names called over a loud speaker or be recognized for any special award, but they are valuable to the team non-the-less.
In life there are “second string players,” people who accomplish things behind the scenes which are vital to a company’s success. They fill supporting roles and see that things get done. It is no different in the church. There are many of you who, if not every day, at least on a regular basis are doing things which benefit the growth of God’s kingdom. It is such people as yourselves that the apostle Paul recognizes in the conclusion of his letter to the church at Colosse. It is these people I would like for us to consider this morning as we think about our own value to the cause of the Gospel.
