Sir, We Wish To See Jesus
“Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
As many of you know, these words were spoken to Phillip during the last week of Jesus’ life before his crucifixion.
In the twelfth chapter of John’s gospel we find Jesus having just entered Jerusalem on a donkey. Those who were with Him when He raised Lazarus from the dead are telling others about this miracle.
The Pharisees, seeing all this, say to one another, “You see that you are not doing any good; look, the whole world has gone after Him.” (v. 19).
John tells us that there were some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the Temple during the Passover feast. They approach Philip, the one disciple with a Greek name, and say, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
Philip then goes to tell Andrew and the two of them go to tell Jesus. What prompted these men to want to see our Lord? Why is it that we want to see Him today? What drives us to seek His face?
