In the eighteenth chapter of the book of Genesis, Abraham and his wife, Sarah, are visited by three men — who we later learn are two angels and the Lord Himself.

According to the custom of the day, Abraham demonstrated true hospitality:

a. He had water brought to wash their feet.

b. He had a choice calf from his herd prepared for them to eat, which he served them along with freshly baked bread, curds and milk.

During this visit, the Lord announces that a year from now Abraham’s wife, Sarah, who will be 90, will have a son.

Of course Sarah laughed and the Lord challenged her, asking, "Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son."

It is at this point that the Lord makes the following statement, which I would like for us to consider this morning,

"For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him."

Our responsibility which God expects us to fulfill is that we “command” our children to “keep the way of the Lord” by teaching them about those things which are right and just.
