How often have you heard the word “gospel” in your lifetime? For many of you here tonight, it is far more times than any of us could count! Like Scripture, we have used it in so many ways:

We speak of preachers preaching “the gospel.”

We have “Gospel Meetings”
Throughout the New Testament, it is used as both a noun and an adjective:

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15).

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).

“Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and
proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom . . .” (Matthew 4:23).

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1).

“. . . Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God” (Mark 1:14).

“and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace”
(Ephesians 6:15).

“Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see your or remain absent, I will hear that your are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel”
(Philippians 1:27).

Many of us have been told, again and again, that the gospel is “good news,” and
this is true, but good news of what?

Tonight, I would like to answer that question by focusing upon the very first “gospel sermon” preached.
