One of the earliest references to the church in the United States is found on tombstone in Paris, Kentucky dated to 1807.

In some circles, churches of Christ have held the dubious distinction of being referred to as "Campbellites." The Campbells were just a part of the history of the efforts that have been made to restore New Testament Christianity.
