This man has been called a rascal. Others have called him a scoundrel. Still others have called him "a liar and a thief." Jesus called him both "unrighteous" and "shrewd" or "wise." Our Lord didn't always feel the need to use only good people to teach important lessons.

The parable of the the Unjust Steward speaks of a rich man and his steward. The Rich man is what would have been called an "absentee landlord." He trusted his wealth to men to oversee his property and financial matters. His steward "wasting his possessions." The rich man tells him that his is no longer to look after his affairs and what the steward does in order to keep from getting caught is the example that Jesus uses in this parable to teach a valuable lesson.
