Often you will hear that the crosses we are called to bear as Christians described simply as trials or hardships we face in our lives. Such as, the difficult employer or supervisor you encounter each day at work. An unfair teacher under whom you must suffer if you are to finish your degree. A controlling mother-in-law who always seems to make life difficult. These are not the crosses Jesus calls us to bear. Neither do they include an illness or a handicap, as difficult as those things may be in our lives. It isn’t just Christians who have illnesses or handicaps.Plenty who do not follow Christ also face such issues in their lives. Our crosses come from specifically walking in the footsteps of Christ, embracing His life. Our cross is the disdain and mistreatment we may experience because we proclaim Jesus as “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). It comes from conducting our lives every day in the world according to Jesus’ standards — morally and ethically. It comes from stepping into difficult circumstances for the sake of the gospel.
