Today, the third Sunday has come to be known in this country as Father’s Day, a time for honoring fathers and their influence in society. As those of us who are Christians know, every Sunday is Father’s Day, a time when we worship and praise our “Father who art in heaven.”
However, this particular day for the honoring of fathers and fatherhood is observed by some 40+ countries worldwide. But what is it that we as fathers do, what is our job description, if you will? Down through the years I am sure that many of father believed his job was to “put food on the table, keep a roof over the heads of his family members and clothes on their backs.”
While it is true that for many years we as fathers have been the financial providers for our families, it now seems in many cases that it takes two, father and mother, to make ends meet. There is one responsibility, however, which I believe that God has given specifically to us as fathers. We are to be the spiritual shepherds of our family, serving under the Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ.
