“No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”  Luke 9:62
When plowing a field with a team of oxen or mules, the farmer fixes his eyes on an object on the opposite side of the field and keeps plowing toward that point.  To look back would be to cause the plow to divert from its intended course and thus plow a crooked furrow.  Once you commit to following Jesus Christ, you must never look back at your previous life and wish for the old days and the old sinful pleasures.  To do so will result in missing the joys of heaven.
Paul realized the importance of this truth.
Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 3:13-14
  • Is Jesus first in your life? Do you spend consistent time with Him each day in His Word, in prayer and in devotion?
  • Is He the Lord of your plans, your thoughts and all that you do?  Is He the Lord of your finances and your possessions?
  •  Have you counted the cost of following Jesus?
  • Will you follow Him and not look back?
