Paul indicates that rewards await us as Christians. However, he is also quick to point out that some will receive more reward than others. Some will work here on earth to produce something that will persevere and as a result will obtain an enduring reward in Heaven. Some others, though, will not produce enduring work here on earth. While such an individual will be saved, “he himself will be saved,” his “work is burned up, he will suffer loss.”
Of what would his loss consist? It seems reasonable to conclude that it would be the loss of “the joy and glory (cf. 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20) of knowing that his labor was fruitful eternally (cf. Galatians 4:11).
“I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.” (Galatians 4:11, NASB95)
Thus, the more of our converts who endure and finally arrive in heaven, the greater our joy and reward will be.
