The idea of creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane,Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd conceived of the idea while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Sonora was raised by her father, because her mother had died, and she wanted him to know how special he was to her. In her eyes he was a courageous, selfless, loving man because of the sacrifices he had made while she was growing up. Because her father had been born in the month of June, she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration on the 19th of June in 1910. Fourteen years later, in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.
This morning, I want to challenge you fathers to commit yourselves to being godly fathers and grandfathers.
