“What commandment is the foremost of all?”     –   Somewhere along the way, someone had come to the conclusion that there were 613 individual statutes in the law:

  •  365 of which were considered negative and 248 positive.
  •  These were further broken down into small and great commandments.
Now this scribe came to Jesus asking Him to make a determination as to which of them all was the greatest.

“Hear, O Israel” (Deuteronomy 6:4)

God has always called His people to listen to Him. Does it bother you when you are talking to someone and they ignore you? God considers it rebellion when His people do not listen to Him.
When the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; you neither believed Him nor listened to His voice. (Deuteronomy 9:23).
“THE LORD IS OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE” (DEUTERONOMY 6:4B)
There is no other God but the Lord. Every ancient civilization had its pantheon of gods. But as Moses declared, there is only one God.
Our God is alive and active in His world — He is not a statue on a pedestal in a museum or temple.

Not only does God call us to listen to Him, but to love Him as well.
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. (John 14:15)
