Early in Jesus’ ministry, when many of His disciples stopped following Him and He asked the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?”, it was Peter who said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.” (John 6:68).
It was Peter, who at Caesarea Philippi, when Jesus asked His disciples, who do you say that I am, he responded, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16).
It was Peter, who as the crowd moved forward to arrest Jesus, drew his sword and cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant (Mark 14:47; John 18:10).
But Peter had been told to put away his sword — he stood helpless as Jesus was arrested.
He along with the other disciples had fled.
Now, he had denied even knowing or associating with Jesus. Why had he rejected the One he had once declared to be “the Son of the living God”?
