The life of a Christian is a life which seeks to rise above the world in which we live. It is true that you and I live in this world and we are constantly affected to some extent by everything that happens to us and around us. However, God’s Word calls upon us to lift our eyes, minds and hearts upward. The apostle John cautioned us not to love the world nor the things in the world because all these things would pass away (1 John 2:15). Paul exhorted the Romans and us as well not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). He encouraged the Christians in Colosse to “keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.” (Colossians 3:1)
For what are we as Christians known?
- Lives of rejoicing
- Forbearing spirits
- Hearts and minds guarded in peace
All of this is found in lives which are “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). Our rejoicing is in the Lord (v. 4). We forbearance is due to the fact that the Lord is near (v. 5). The peace of God is granted to us in Christ Jesus (v. 7).
