A Commitment Like No Other
Some people like notoriety:
a. They like having their name in the public spotlight.
b. They relish large crowds who have come out to hear or see them.
Jesus was not one of those people — large crowds did not fool him. Luke 14:25 tells us that “large crowds were going along with Him.”
However, Jesus knew that many were following Him for selfish or superficial reasons:
a. They were more interested in what he might do for them physically: feed or heal.
b. Than they were about the feeding of their souls.
Jesus wanted to weed out those who followed Him for such superficial reasons. He knew that when things started to heat up, they would fall away.
It was because of this that He turned to them and began to lay down the demands of discipleship. Jesus told the crowd that day two quick parables, both with the same basic message. From these and the other things He said we learn some important lessons about commitment.
